OTAQ’s LPAS Technology Is Making Waves in The Aquaculture Industry

30/03/2023

OTAQ’s AI LPAS technology provides early warning of algae blooms by automatically identifying harmful phytoplankton species.

OTAQ’s Live Plankton Analysis System (LPAS) automatically identifies phytoplankton around marine aquaculture sites that could potentially result in Harmful Algae Blooms (HABs) and negatively impact fish health. We have recently had an article featured in Fish Farmer magazine’s March 2023 issue about our LPAS system, with more information below.

“Early warnings of algae blooms can make all the difference.”

Harmful Algae Blooms (HABs) occur when microscopic algal or phytoplankton populations, amplified by environmental factors such as weather conditions and temperature, grow to such levels that they become harmful to surrounding life. These blooms can be particularly problematic for fish gill health and, with global temperatures rising, are becoming a more prevalent challenge for the global fish farming industry. It is why early warnings of algae blooms can make all the difference.

OTAQ’s Live Plankton Analysis System (LPAS) automatically identifies phytoplankton around marine aquaculture sites that could potentially result in Harmful Algae Blooms (HABs) and negatively impact fish health. By providing critical and timely information, LPAS enables operators to make early and informed decisions on site-specific mitigation strategies and actions.

The LPAS solution consists of four main components:

  • AI Engine
  • Imaging Hardware
  • Analysis and user interface software
  • Connectivity and data storage

AI ENGINE

The AI Engine detects specified individual phytoplankton genus with a confidence level greater than 80% and provides the cell concentration of each. Working with industry-based microbiologists and academia, lists of phytoplankton genus of most concern have been identified per region.

“The system is stand-alone, reliable and easy to install and use”

IMAGING HARDWARE

Stand-alone, reliable, and easy to install and use, the imaging hardware enables the operator to quickly capture the digital images of local water samples and pass them to the analysis software. It does this by combining a laboratory-grade microscope with a megapixel digital camera which is linked to the AI engine.

“The LPAS takes into consideration the need to function on both well-connected and remote sites.”

ANALYSIS AND USER INTERFACE SOFTWARE

The analysis and user interface software alerts on the presence of specific species that are a concern in that region. A clear traffic light system lets site operators know if there is an issue, and they can review more detailed data if required. All data is logged and recorded, allowing trends to be tracked.

CONNECTIVITY AND DATA STORAGE

LPAS can be configured to suit the level of internet connectivity and takes into consideration the need to function on both well-connected and remote sites. Images and results data collected by the LPAS are automatically stored locally and in the OTAQ cloud for presentation and analysis.

“It Is anticipated that the system will be a powerful tool for fish farmers.”

The LPAS provides an easy and reliable method to gather immediate and accurate information on potential HAB risks. It is anticipated that the system will be a powerful tool for fish farmers.

OTAQ launch OceanSENSE 4 subsea leak detection system

11/08/2021

OTAQ Offshore is proud to announce the final word in subsea leak detection with the release of the OceanSENSE 4.

Designed to detect all fluorescing trace dyes used in subsea leak detection from a single 6000m rated Titanium housing, the OceanSENSE 4 utilises the same core technology as the industry standard OTAQ OceanSENSE subsea leak and cement returns detection system.

With two units purchased and in the field with two separate clients, the ROV mount OceanSENSE 4 enables operators to instantly switch between detecting different dye types ‘on-the-fly’ via the newly designed topside software. The ability to detect all dye types means there is no requirement to mobilise multiple detection configurations or recover the ROV to surface. OceanSENSE 4 is engineered to save operators time and money and to eliminate all risk associated with sensor and dye incompatibilities.

Utilising cutting edge technology OceanSENSE 4 is extremely capable. When mixing fluorescing dye into the carrier medium, the industry standard is 200,000 parts per billion – all OceanSENSE models detect dye to 6 parts per billion. The sensor feedback based topside software removes human judgement and inconsistencies from the detection operation. The OceanSENSE 4 unequivocally informs the operator when dye is present in the water column thus, depending on the application, locating the leak, confirming asset integrity or confirming the arrival of cement at the seafloor.

OceanSENSE was first released to the market in 2009, with operators rapidly positioning the system as the global industry standard for subsea dye detection. To date, OceanSENSE technology has achieved in excess of 50,000 offshore days on over 1000 subsea projects. The OceanSENSE 4 builds on this pedigree by ensuring increased operator flexibility while delivering repeatability of results, protecting the environment and reducing offshore operational costs.

Dr Harry Rotsch, inventor of the OceanSENSE range, expands; “as the industry looks to rebound from ongoing pressures and recent global events, the 4 dye detection system is the natural evolution of OceanSENSE. We have always looked to offer the best technical solution while responding to market forces. The system will continue to position OceanSENSE at the forefront of subsea dye detection for the rest of this decade”.

OceanSENSE 4 is available for hire or sale directly from OTAQ Offshore, for further information or to arrange a product demonstration please click here

OTAQ to help get new talent into the tech and electronics sector in Lancaster over the coming years!

16/09/2020

We have some fantastic news to announce for the Lancaster Electronics scene! We are pleased to announce OTAQ Group Ltd and a number of other Lancaster electronics businesses have been successful as a consortium in receiving funding from the UK Government’s Fast Track Digital Workforce Fund to help get new talent into the tech and electronics sector in Lancaster over the coming years.

The project – known as Tech Lancaster – was one of 14 projects to receive funding from a £3 million joint venture between UK Government (DCMS), Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) and Lancashire Digital Skills Partnership (LDSP) – this pilot programme is the first of its kind in the UK. The fund will be utilised to provide employer led top-up technical training in and around the Lancaster area for both existing and prospective staff, with participants who finish the scheme guaranteed interviews at consortia companies. The training will include distance learning modules (MOOCs) and workshop/lab based tuition to help candidates gain industry specific skills (such as IPC certification) to make them work ready for local employers in the electronics and tech sector.  The consortia will be working in conjunction with Lancaster and Morecambe College and other partners to deliver the scheme.

We are incredibly proud to be working with other electronics companies in our area to help address the skills gap and make a difference to those underemployed groups within our community. Recruitment and retention in the electronics industry is a constant challenge and as a company we strive to do our best to address this challenge and do what we can to make a difference.

Applications to join the programme are open to all and enrolment will commence in late September through the Tech Lancaster website. You can also follow the hashtag #FastTrackFund on social media.

How we are responding to the covid-19 virus developments

16/03/2020

The OTAQ Group of companies will, at all times, continue to follow UK Government guidelines on how to deal with covid-19. We have received advice from our insurers on the matter and will take their advice into account when making decisions on the operation of our businesses. With immediate effect, any employee exhibiting symptoms of covid-19 (as defined by the Chief Medical Officer of the UK Government) must immediately self-isolate and report this to their line manager. They must remain at home until given clearance to return to work by a medical professional.

The OTAQ Group Directors are taking this matter extremely seriously and continue to monitor the situation as it develops. We are in the process of instigating the following should it become necessary to do so;
• Wherever possible, we are offering client meetings to be “online” rather than face-to-face and avoiding any physical contact, such as handshakes in any meetings that continue on a face-to-face basis.
• We have identified staff and contractors to provide emergency cover for all of our key customer-facing and field support roles within the company should they be required.
• We are following all government guidelines with respect to international travel, isolation & hand-washing protocols. Business travel to high-risk areas has been suspended until further notice.
• We are suspending attending conferences in March and April that require travel, both domestic and international
• Employees are being asked to avoid public transport wherever possible & feasible.
• Hand sanitiser will be installed in all food preparation areas & bathrooms. Government hand washing guidelines will be displayed throughout the company.
• We will instigate deep-cleaning of all our offices should it become necessary. For example, an employee becoming symptomatic or being diagnosed will trigger a deep-clean of that office.
• Colleagues returning from travel, either business or personal, from a high-risk area are being asked to work from home for 14 days irrespective of symptoms.
• Stock rental assets will be stored in Lancaster and Aberdeen to facilitate our ability to supply customers should it become necessary to instigate home working.
• Any employee exhibiting symptoms associated with covid-19 or a cough, cold & sore throat will be asked to self-isolate for 7 days or longer as per government guidelines.
• We are preparing to be able to instigate home working should the situation require it.

We are confident that we can continue to support our customers in the coming weeks and months and that we will be able to provide the level of service necessary to maintain all operating equipment.

OTAQ wins business award at Scotland Edge

16/11/2017

OTAQ, a Scottish company designing and manufacturing technology for the global fish farming industry, has been announced as one of the biggest winners of the Scottish Edge awards, with a prize of £100,000.

The competition, aimed at identifying and supporting Scotland’s up-and-coming, innovative and entrepreneurial talent invited OTAQ to pitch at the finals of the event in Edinburgh this week where over £1.27million in grants and loans was awarded.

The Oban based firm scooped £100,000 after Commercial Director Chris Hyde led the firm’s pitch on their launch product, an innovative new deterrent system called SealFENCE which uses unique underwater acoustic technology to prevent seals from attacking marine sites.

With estimates that seal and sea lion losses can be as much as 10% of production in many areas, SealFENCE solves an industry wide problem all in a package designed to operate in the world’s harshest environments.

From 239 original applicants, just 22 of Scotland’s most promising entrepreneurs were invited to pitch their businesses to an expert panel of judges in order to win up to £100,000 each in grant funding and loans. Just 15 of the start-up and growth stage businesses were successful with only OTAQ and two others awarded the full amount applied for.

Chris Hyde, commercial director, OTAQ, said: “This award is going to make a major difference to our company and will mean that we can accelerate our export plans significantly, introduce our product to more markets and recruit more staff this year.

“Our company vision is to become world leaders in aquaculture technology and specifically in acoustic products such as predator control and monitoring systems.  Our key area of expertise lies within underwater acoustics and sonar and we intend to build a reputation as experts in this field within our industry.

Gordon Merrylees, Scottish EDGE board member and Head of Entrepreneurship at Royal Bank of Scotland and Natwest, commented: “the Scottish EDGE has had a huge impact on Scotland’s economy, with our alumni having generated an additional £31.80m in turnover, secured £28.36m in additional investment, and created 641 jobs since receiving their Scottish EDGE funding and support.”

Sir Tom Hunter, renowned Scottish entrepreneur and philanthropist, said: “100% of the net new jobs in the UK will come from businesses less than five years old – the winners at Scottish Edge are the job creators of today… We need to invest in them and nurture them in any way we can to build our economy and to provide the quality jobs our people deserve. We need to build a far greater pipeline of high growth businesses if Scotland is to succeed, Scottish Edge is one critical element of that pipeline and I commend all the entrants – not winners yet – and the winners for their commitment to building great entrepreneurial businesses.”

Chris Hyde of OTAQ, added: “The entire Scottish Edge experience has been invaluable.  The process and feedback from the judges has really makes us focus on our business and how best to communicate what it does; this has put us in very strong position for achieving our vision.”
